The Anthropic IPO What You Need to Know Before Trading It

August 24, 2026  |  Research Insights

The potential Anthropic IPO is shaping up to be one of 2026's defining capital markets events. With the company standing at the center of the generative AI boom – and its revenues surging – its public listing is drawing significant interest from retail and institutional investors alike.

In this article, we are going to provide a concise overview of Anthropic, covering its core offering, financial drivers, revenues, and valuation. Here’s what you need to know before trading the IPO.

Who is Anthropic?

Anthropic is an American AI company that was founded in 20211. It is best known as the developer behind Claude – a powerful suite of AI models competing directly with generative AI systems such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini.

The company was founded by siblings Dario (currently CEO) and Daniela Amodei (currently President) and several other individuals, all of whom previously worked at OpenAI1. Whilst at OpenAI, the cohort had had concerns in relation to AI safety and the speed of commercialization, so they set out to launch their own generative AI start-up.

Since its launch, Anthropic has experienced prolific growth, with revenues hitting $65 billion2 on an annualized basis. Where it has had the most success is with enterprise customers, who are using Claude for complex technical workflows, code generation, and automated data processing.

The company’s backers include technology businesses such as Amazon, Alphabet, Nvidia, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Zoom Communications, venture capital and institutional investment firms such as Sequoia Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, ICONIQ Capital, and Altimeter Capital, and individuals such as Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt3. Amazon is Anthropic's largest single outside strategic backer, having committed tens of billions of dollars across multiple investment rounds4.

What is Claude?

Claude is Anthropic’s flagship suite of AI models. It is renowned for its strong performance in writing, coding, research, problem-solving, and large context handling.

Claude AI models are categorized into several distinct capability tiers5:

  • Haiku: A lightweight, fast, and cost-effective model for quick, high-volume tasks.
  • Sonnet: The flagship, high-performance model optimized for complex reasoning, coding, and day-to-day enterprise tasks.
  • Opus: A powerful model built for highly complex analytical, creative, and deep technical problems.
  • Fable: Next-generation intelligence for long-running agents.

It’s worth noting that Anthropic has also developed an advanced AI model called Mythos. However, due to the risks associated with its autonomous exploit development capabilities, the company elected not to release it as a standard consumer or developer model6.

Who are Anthropic’s Customers?

Today, Anthropic serves thousands of enterprises, small businesses, developer teams, and consumer end-users across a wide range of industries. Its customers include:

  • Technology companies: Tech businesses use Claude for internal software development, AI agent infrastructure, and to power consumer features within their own products.
  • Financial and professional services firms: Firms in these industries use Claude for financial modeling, risk analysis, legal analysis, and customer intelligence.
  • Healthcare and life sciences businesses: Organizations in these industries use its AI technology to analyze research literature, process clinical documentation, and to support biomedical discovery.
  • E-commerce and retail companies: Brands use Claude for automated customer service, personalized marketing campaigns, and workflow automation.
  • Developers and individuals: Software engineers and creators use Claude to write and debug code, design software architectures, analyze complex codebases, and rapidly prototype new applications.

Who are Anthropic’s Competitors?

Given that it operates in the high-stakes frontier AI landscape, Anthropic has many competitors. These range from mega-cap tech giants to open-source developers and specialized foundation model labs.

Today, its two biggest competitors are probably OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Google DeepMind (Gemini). Both of these companies possess massive proprietary compute infrastructure, vast consumer distribution channels, and cutting-edge frontier models and are challenging Anthropic head-to-head for market dominance.

What is Anthropic’s Revenue in 2026?

Anthropic’s annualized revenue run rate – a projection of a full year’s revenue based on a recent, shorter period – surpassed $65 billion at the end of July, according to Bloomberg2. That’s up from $47 billion in May and $9 billion at the end of 2025.

According to the Financial Times, Anthropic’s investors expect the company to continue growing at around the same rate for the remainder of the year2. This would take its ARR to between $100 billion and $120 billion by the end of 20262.

Is Anthropic Profitable?

For a long time, Anthropic wasn’t profitable. However, according to Bloomberg, it generated positive adjusted operating income in the second quarter of 20262 – a first for a frontier AI lab7.

Investors should not assume that Anthropic will continue to be profitable from here, however. In May, the company warned investors that profitability may not hold for the full year as data center spending is set to rise in the second half of 20267.

What is Anthropic’s Valuation?

Anthropic's latest official funding round valued the artificial intelligence company at $965 billion post-money2. However, backers are now anticipating a valuation of $2 trillion or more for the IPO2.

If the company was to IPO at that valuation, it would be the largest IPO in history2. And at a $2 trillion valuation, Anthropic would instantly be one of the world’s largest companies.

Trading the Anthropic IPO

In conclusion, an Anthropic IPO presents a classic high-stakes venture in frontier technology. While there is potential for upside in the long run as the company grows its revenues, there is also significant downside risk tied to sky-high valuation expectations, escalating infrastructure costs, and intense competition.

Ultimately, investors looking to trade the IPO must carefully balance the company's unprecedented trajectory against the high-valuation premium and rising infrastructure costs required to stay at the frontier. It’s not an easy task – compelling arguments exist for both long and short positions.
