When Can Retail Investors Buy Anthropic Stock?

October 30, 2026  |  Anthropic Stock News

Retail investors can buy Anthropic stock at two moments. First, at the IPO price, if a broker receives an allocation and offers shares to its clients. Second, on the first trading day, once Nasdaq opens ANT, at whatever the market price is. Reports put the first trading day in the second half of November 2026, but Anthropic hasn't set a date.

When can I buy Anthropic stock?

On the first trading day, for most investors. Anthropic filed its public S-1 on October 26, 2026. After the price range, the roadshow, SEC sign-off, and pricing, Nasdaq opens the Class A shares under ANT. The Wall Street Journal reported on October 26 that Anthropic is targeting the week of November 16. Until then, there's no exchange route to the stock. Our article on buying Anthropic stock before the IPO covers the pre-IPO offers to be wary of.

Can retail investors get shares at the IPO price?

Sometimes, but usually in small amounts. The SEC's investor guide spells it out. Underwriters "have wide latitude in allocating IPO shares," and in popular deals they "usually offer those shares to their most valued clients." Online brokers that take part "often have only a small allotment of shares to sell to the public."

Anthropic may be different in one respect. Bloomberg reported on October 27 that the company is weighing a retail allocation of 15% to 20% of the deal. JPMorgan would lead the US retail effort. Bloomberg's figure is a report. Nothing has been filed. A broker that recommends IPO shares has to judge them suitable for the client. Each broker also sets its own eligibility rules for taking part.

Who can't buy shares at the IPO price?

People FINRA defines as restricted persons. FINRA Rule 5130 bars member firms from selling new issues to broker-dealers and their staff. The same goes for finders and fiduciaries involved in the deal, portfolio managers buying for themselves, and certain related accounts.

How does buying on the first trading day work?

Through a normal brokerage order, once ANT is open. Orders entered before the open join Nasdaq's IPO opening process. During a 10-minute display-only period, an indicative price is shown but nothing trades. The stock then opens at a single price that clears the largest number of orders. The opening price can land above or below the IPO price.

The opening doesn't have to happen at 9:30 a.m. The lead bank first has to confirm the stock is ready and approve the price Nasdaq calculates. SpaceX's first trade came at about 11:46 a.m. Eastern on June 12, 2026, at $150.00 against a $135 IPO price. Our article on the IPO date versus the first trading day sets out the opening process.

What is flipping, and what do the rules say about it?

Flipping means selling IPO shares within 30 days of the offering. FINRA Rule 5131 limits how firms can claw back the commissions their brokers earned on shares that clients flipped. It also bans spinning – allocating IPO shares to company executives in return for investment banking business.

What other ways are there to trade a newly listed stock?

Two, once the shares are trading. Leveraged and inverse ETFs aim to multiply the stock's daily move, up or down. They carry different and greater risks than the stock itself, and they're built for short holding periods. Our guide to Anthropic leveraged ETFs explains how they work and the risks that come with them. Our guide to how to short Anthropic stock explains the mechanics and risks of three methods.
