Apple reminded investors why it remains one of the world’s most profitable companies after reporting another record-breaking June quarter. Revenue, earnings and margins exceeded Wall Street expectations, driven by exceptional iPhone demand, a sharp rebound in Mac sales and continued resilience across most international markets.1
Despite what would normally be considered an outstanding earnings report, the market focused elsewhere. Shares declined in after-hours trading as management warned that supply constraints and rising component costs would likely prevent Apple from fully capitalising on strong customer demand during the current quarter.2
The reaction highlights a familiar theme dominating Big Tech earnings this year: delivering strong results is no longer enough. Investors want reassurance that artificial intelligence spending, semiconductor availability and future product cycles can sustain today’s premium valuations.
Apple reported fiscal third-quarter revenue of $109.4 billion, representing 16% year-over-year growth, while diluted earnings per share climbed to $2.02, ahead of analyst expectations. Management described the period as the strongest June quarter in Apple history, supported by double-digit revenue growth across virtually every geographic segment and most hardware categories.1
The biggest contributor was once again the iPhone business.
iPhone revenue surged more than 21% to approximately $54.3 billion, reflecting robust global demand for the latest devices despite a mature smartphone market. Mac revenue also surprised to the upside, rising nearly 29%, helped by continued momentum from the Apple Silicon strategy and strong demand for the newest MacBook lineup.1
Services revenue reached another record at approximately $30.7 billion, although the figure came in slightly below some of Wall Street’s elevated expectations, showing that even the fastest-growing business segment is becoming difficult to outperform.3
The latest results reinforce an important reality. Despite years of discussion around diversification into services, wearables and artificial intelligence, Apple remains fundamentally an iPhone company.
The iPhone business generated almost half of total quarterly revenue, once again demonstrating remarkable pricing power and customer loyalty. Even amid higher interest rates, slowing consumer spending and intensifying global competition, the premium positioning of the Apple brand continues to attract consumers willing to upgrade their devices.
Mac was arguably the biggest positive surprise.
The introduction of newer Apple Silicon-powered products continues to improve the Mac business, allowing Apple to steadily gain market share while competitors struggle with weaker enterprise demand and slower replacement cycles.4
Ironically, one of the biggest challenges facing Apple today is being created by the very technology investors hope will fuel the next growth cycle.
Management highlighted that memory shortages and supply limitations linked to booming AI infrastructure demand are beginning to affect production capacity. Advanced memory used across iPhone, Mac and iPad devices has become significantly more expensive as semiconductor manufacturers prioritise AI servers and data centres.2
Chief Executive Tim Cook acknowledged during his last earnings call that memory costs are expected to continue rising, while supply limitations could constrain shipments during the coming quarters.1
Rather than facing weak consumer demand, Apple now finds itself confronting a different problem: demand exceeds what the company can efficiently manufacture.
If the reported numbers looked impressive, forward guidance was considerably less exciting.
Management forecast revenue growth of approximately 9% to 11% for the September quarter, below consensus expectations entering the release. The softer outlook overshadowed the quarterly beat and triggered profit-taking after Apple shares had rallied strongly ahead of the earnings announcement.2
Investors appear concerned that supply bottlenecks, higher input costs and slowing services momentum could temporarily limit earnings expansion, even if underlying consumer demand remains healthy.
The market reaction illustrates current investor psychology.
With Apple trading near historically elevated valuation multiples, expectations leave little room for disappointment. Even modest guidance disappointment can outweigh otherwise exceptional financial performance.
One aspect of the earnings report received relatively little attention but deserves recognition.
Gross margin exceeded 50%, highlighting exceptional pricing power and operational efficiency despite rising component costs and ongoing geopolitical pressures affecting global supply chains.3
Few companies of comparable size continue to generate margins at these levels while simultaneously investing aggressively in artificial intelligence, silicon development and next-generation hardware.
Combined with enormous cash generation and continued shareholder returns through dividends and share buybacks, profitability remains one of the strongest competitive advantages for Apple.
The latest earnings confirm that the underlying business remains exceptionally healthy.
Consumer demand has not materially weakened, ecosystem engagement continues expanding, and the Apple brand remains unmatched globally.
Future growth will depend less on selling more iPhones and more on how successfully Apple brings artificial intelligence into its products while managing ongoing semiconductor supply challenges.
Apple continues to generate industry-leading profitability, exceptional free cash flow and unmatched customer loyalty. The challenge now is convincing investors that the next phase of growth can justify its rich valuation.
From a technical perspective, Apple has enjoyed a powerful rally this year, with the stock gaining around 28% year-to-date and significantly outperforming the rest of the Magnificent Seven. However, momentum is beginning to show signs of fatigue. A bearish divergence has emerged between the share price and the Relative Strength Index (RSI), a classic technical signal that often precedes a period of consolidation or a short-term pullback.
With momentum indicators being overbought and internal momentum conditions deteriorating, the risk-reward profile has become less favourable in the near term, making a retracement towards the $300 level a likely scenario. Such a move would likely reflect elevated investor expectations and profit-taking rather than deterioration in Apple’s underlying fundamentals.
Over the longer term, the investment case remains firmly intact. Apple continues to generate exceptional cash flow, maintain industry-leading profitability and benefit from one of the strongest consumer ecosystems globally. Any earnings-related weakness could therefore present a more attractive entry point for long-term investors. We continue to see upside towards the $360 level over the medium to long term.
