Nvidia and AMD each announced new AI chips on consecutive days, with Nvidia revealing its Rubin chip platform on Sunday and AMD following on Monday. This announcement from Nvidia arrives shortly after the introduction of its Blackwell chip in March.
AMD presented its latest AI chip offerings and shared its strategy to introduce new products annually as part of an effort to compete with Nvidia in the AI market. The new MI325X chip from AMD is designed to support the expanding computational needs of AI data centers. After the MI325X, AMD intends to release its MI350 series in 2025, which will feature a novel chip architecture aimed at greatly enhancing AI inference capabilities. Furthermore, AMD has scheduled the debut of its MI400 series for 2026.
Nvidia chips have played a crucial role in powering the AI surge, handling the essential calculations needed to develop and implement AI applications such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. These operations generally take place in data centers equipped with servers that house these chips.

Nvidia’s latest data center revenue stood at $22.6 billion, which is nearly 10x that of AMD, for the first quarter of this year.
Nvidia currently holds over 80% of the market share in AI chips, but AMD is gaining ground due to a scarcity of Nvidia chips and an increased demand for alternative options. Big Tech companies such as AMD, Intel, Qualcomm, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are all striving to challenge Nvidia's lead in this area.
